A sound example of an Imperial Austrian dress sword. This piece has a 28 1/2" blade, plain, has a single fuller and is slightly curved with a double-edge for 8 1/2" at the point. The blade has no maker's name. The hilt has a brass backstrap and pommel with raised acanthus leaves, the brass basket shaped guard and knuckle-bow are pierced with a leaf and vine design and have the Austrian crest with a crown over a double-headed eagle. The black leather scabbard has brass mounts with reposeful floral design and the throat has a crown over a monogram "FL1" for Franz Joseph 1st King of Austria and Hungary. The blade is clean with light gray patina and some original polish left, the hilt is in fine condition with all of the fish-skin wrap and wire binding on the grip. The scabbard is sound with the leather body showing wear on old black paint over a chipped and crazed surface, the brass mounts are in very good condition with some gilding left. A better than average example of an Imperial Austrian sword which are not that common in North America. A piece that could be greatly improved with a careful cleaning.
