WW1 1917 Mauser Oberndorf 1898/05 Butcher Blade Bayonet & Original Scabbard
** Fresh From WW2 Vet's Family! **
SOLD
Description: Fresh out of storage where it has been since the late 1940's, a World War 1 1917-dated Mauser Oberndorf Model 98/05 "Butcher Blade" bayonet and scabbard that was brought back to the States after World War 2. This Mauser Oberndorf example has a beautiful bright blade and does not appear to ever have been re-sharpened since leaving the factory in 1917. The top of the blade is stamped with German Military inspection proofs and "17" for the date. The left ricasso of the blade is stamped with Mauser's factory mark "Waffenfabrik Mauser A.G. Oberndorf A.N." which is crisp and clear. The metal fittings on the handle show some old rust and a patina but have a very attractive look to them, as do the original grooved Walnut handles. Both handles are perfectly fit to the bayonet and tight to the tang with no wiggle. The rifle attachment hardware is in perfect working order and has the proper spring pressure. The original factory blued steel scabbard is in great shape overall. The scabbard body still shows a lot of original factory blue finish and is free from any major damage. The scabbard shows it's age with evidence of prior surface rust all over but no real pitting, and there are a few tiny dents in the body but nothing that stands out. The factory Mauser stamp is crisp and clear on the side opposite the frog stud, and the frog stud itself is perfectly tight to the scabbard with no play in it. The scabbard still has it's original throat and blade tensioners in place, and the screw that holds them in looks perfect and un-turned since being assembled at the factory. The fit of the bayonet to it's original scabbard is excellent. If you have been looking for one of these finely-made and deadly-looking "Butcher Blade" bayonets for your collection here is your chance to get an excellent example. This Model 98/05 Bayonet should be an excellent long-term investment and has never been on the collector's market before. SOLD |
