Original Indian Wars Era Springfield US Model 1880 Hunting Knife with Rare Original Short Leather Loop Scabbard in excellent condition. No rust or pitting on blade, no cracks on handle.
M1880 Hunting Knives with Short Leather Belt Loops were originally manufactured in 1883 by Watervliet Arsenal for Gen. Benet, Chief of Ordinance. These short loop scabbards were in service for a short time as they were replaced by scabbards with longer belt loops or much more common brass hooks in 1888.
While there were about 11,000 of these knives were produced, their survival rate is not that great as they saw heavy use during the Indian Wars and in Western Frontier outposts. The blades are usually pitted, re-sharpened, and corroded; wood handles were prone to damage in the field and were often replaced. It’s even harder to find one of these knives with short leather loop scabbard as many of them were later modified to accept the brass hook by removing the leather loop. In the end, not many of these scabbards have survived this modification or the passage of time.
