Item Description
This is a very good (and quite scarce) Civil War/Indian War Model 1840 Light Horse Artillery Saber manufactured by the Union Army horse-mounted artillery by the Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts in 1854. This model was used from its adoption in 1840 and was manufactured from 1844 through 1865. The model 1840 Light Artillery Saber is one of the scarcest of all Civil War bladed weapons because the mounted artillery, who were issued this saber, were a very small branch.
Because of the small size of the Horse Artillery in the Civil War, less than 20,000 Model 1840 Light Horse Artillery Sabers were manufactures. This model has a 32-1/4" long blade in excellent, unsharpened condition. The blade is marked "Ames Mfg. Co./Chicopee, Mass" on one side of the ricasso and "U.S.". "A.D.K." is on the other side, which stands for A.D. King, an inspector of arms from 1831-1863 for the US government.
The blade has a single, wide fuller. The blade also shows some small areas of discoloration, but still has a sharp edge (but with no grind marks indicative of a post-war sharpening). The handle is a relatively straight piece of wood still wrapped in its original leather with twisted brass wire. The brass hilt and knuckle bow exhibit a dark mustard, almost black uncleaned patina. The original leather washer at the base of the ricasso is still intact. The scabbard is uncleaned and has a heavy, brown patina. Remnants of the original leather hangers with the hardware are on the scabbard.
This is a visually pleasing, very scarce, and original Indian War/Civil War saber with the original iron scabbard. This would be an important piece to add to any cavalry, artillery, or Civil War saber collection.
