Griswold and Gunnison
Description: Griswold and Gunnison Confederate revolver, made in August-September of 1862. The brass parts of these pistols were cast from the church bells of Macon, Georgia, and the iron parts were forged from scrap iron, horseshoes, wagon tires, etc., due to the metal shortage in the south during the War Between the States. Some 2000 of these pistols were made plant in Griswoldville, Georgia before the Yankees burned the factory in 1864. Marked with CSA on the left side of the frame. Matching serial numbers on the right side of the frame, cylinder, and barrel. These parts plus the hammer, wedge, loading lever, and frame screws are original, however the gun is not completely original. The backstrap, trigger guard, mainspring, trigger, hand, and grips are reproduction parts from Dixie Gun Works, as these parts were missing when I acquired the pistol 30 years ago. The screws that attach these reproduction parts are Colt screws which have a slightly different thread than the original Confederate screws. The finish has been cleaned, but is a pitted patina overall. The bore is dark and pitted but still shows strong, visible, gain twist rifling. The gun is not shootable, as the nipples are damaged, and I would not trust the forge welded wrought iron cylinder to hold the pressure. This is a good, honest, collectable relic weapon from the Civil War, and would be valued at many thousands of dollars more if it were all original. SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: Griswold and Gunnison Model: .36 Cal.
