Description: Invented in 1878 by Lt. David A. Lyle (a graduate of West Point in 1869) of the US Army Ordnance Corp., the Lyle cannon was a technological idea that made the U.S. Lifesaving Service (now U.S. Coast Guard) more efficient. The cannon weights 202 lbs. and when loaded with an 18 lb. projectile, it could fire a shot line a maximum of 695 yards to a ship in distress. By 1906 the Lyle cannon was responsible for saving approximately 4,500 lives. It remained in production through World War II. This particuliar Lyle cannon was manufactured at the West Point Foundry (WFP) in 1878, the first year of production of the Lyle cannon. The muzzle is well marked with the serial number (126), inspector's initials (C.W.W), date of manufacture (1878) and contractor (W.P.F.). The cannon is marked on the right trunnion "U.S./L.S.S." (U.S. Lifesaving Service). The wood and metal mounts are sound and the metal mounts still retain good traces of the original thinning red paint.
