Model 1892 Bayonet and Model 1899 Scabbard for the 30-40 Krag Rifle
Description: The US Bayonet Model of 1892 was the first knife bayonet to be adopted by the US military. It was closely patterned after the Swiss Model 1889. The Model 1892 was made to fit US Model 1892, 1896 and 1898 30-40 Krag rifles. Blades on the Model 1892 bayonet were blued up until April 1, 1895 but those manufactured after that date were left in the bright. The walnut grips were sanded smooth until April 1899, after which slight ridges were allowed to remain. The rivets holding the grips were ground smooth against the washers until late 1899 when the rivets were left slightly domed. Some collectors refer to a Model 1898 bayonet. That was the year the changes just mentioned were made to the grip but, according to this seller's research, there is no recorded 1898 model date in US ordinance books. So I will leave the designation for this bayonet as the Model 1892. The US Bayonet Scabbard Model of 1892 was made of sheet metal, as was the belt hook pinned to the back. Both the scabbard and hook were blued. The scabbard was able to rotate where it was pinned to the belt hook. Modifications to limit the amount of rotation resulted in a change in designation to the scabbard Model 1896. Later changes to the design of the belt hook and, again, to limit the rotation, resulted in the scabbard Model 1899. All bayonets and scabbards for the Krag rifle were made by the Springfield Armory. Production ceased with the adoption of the US Springfield Model 1903 rifle. The bayonet featured here is the US Model 1892 with the Model 1899 scabbard. It is unaltered and is in excellent overall condition.
