The Genesis of the Pocket Auto Pistol: 1893 - 2015
Description: Genesis of the Pocket Auto Pistol 1893 - 2015 Genesis of the Pocket Auto Pistol: 1893 – 2015 is the product of over 3 years of research, taking the reader back to where it all began – Europe 1893. European firearm manufacturers were aggressively pursuing alternative firearm designs, auto-loading weapons. The book begins by examining the groundbreaking work of Hugo Borchardt, Hiram Maxim, the Federele brothers, Louis Schmeisser, John Browning, Ferdinand Mannlicher, Karel Krnka, Rudolf Frommer, Andreas Schwarzlose and others. Foreign-made pocket auto pistols that could be acquired in the first and second decade of the 20th century are then evaluated, drawing upon period writer’s comments and assessments. They include: Astra, Beretta, Clement, Dreyse, Frommer, FN/Browning, Jieffeco, LeFrancais, Lignose, Mauser, Pieper, Roth Sauer, Ruby, Sauer & Sohn, Schwarzlose, Star, Steyr, Stock, Walman, Walther, Webley and Weiner. America was quite comfortable making and selling revolvers, giving Europe sole access to the new firearms technology, American firearms designers with new auto-loading weapons designs (Borchardt, Maxim and Browning) were forced to travel to Europe in order to see their designs produced. The initial reservations concerning the early auto pistols will be recounted and reexamined in the context of today’s auto pistols. The American-made pocket auto pistols from the same period (Colt, Harrington & Richardson, Remington, Savage and Smith & Wesson) are also evaluated, again drawing upon period writer’s comments and assessments. The specific and significant contributions of the early foreign and American automatic pistol designers are then recounted. Features and functions considered standard in today’s pocket auto pistols are traced to the actual auto pistol in which they first appeared. The author also identifies eight early pocket auto pistols still available in the today’s marketplace that he believes would indeed fare very well 100 years forward. Finally, today’s pocket auto pistol market is reviewed: design trends, new materials, accessories and the new large caliber pocket auto pistols. New technology-driven innovations, such as plastic, smart, and 3D printed auto pistols, are also examined. The book contains over 300 pictures, showing the actual firearms, cutaway drawings, patents, and period catalogs/advertisements, with the vast majority in color. An extensive references section is also provided, which should be very useful to the shooter, collector and the student of the pocket auto pistol.
