#0947 Confederate officers Civil War sabre, unmarked
Description: #0947 Confederate officers Civil War sabre, unmarked as to maker (which is not uncommon), and being a field grade officer style with the “CS” cast in the handguard and “CSA” etched on the blade along with the usual decorative scrolling. All-metal scabbard with brass trim and just minor denting and a thin patina. The blade etching is about 85-90% intact (if not more), the grip has been worn to about 20% tatter wrap remaining and the twisted retaining wire is missing about half of its length. Okay, sounds pretty darn good so far, doesn’t it? However, here is always the important caveat to consider with Confederate items ….the possibility of a fake. What troubles me the most about this particular saber is that it has no mentionable pitting on the blade, and the age mottling to the blade seems a bit too uniform in my opinion …and being as Confederate weapons are so desirable, and there are few books on such weapons, the possibility of such fakery is always something to consider. I purchased this saber in a very small of non-related items, so it basically has no provenance, so I caution that the buyer do some research of his own. As for me, I’m pricing this as being a very clever and well-done old fake; but if it is proved righteous, it will easily be worth five times this much!! About VG/VG+, as Confederate items go. $1495 SOLD |
