CDV Lincoln McClellan Sharpsburg Antietam Grove Farm Custer
Description: CDV of President Abraham Lincoln visiting with General McClellan at Mount Airy, also known as the Grove Farm, just outside Sharpsburg, MD, two weeks after the bloody battle at Antietam, about October 3, 1862. This famous picture was taken by Alexander Gardner. To the far right and slightly separated from the rest of the group, wearing the slouch hat with his hand on his sword, is a young George Armstrong Custer (personally my favorite part of the photo!). Not long after this meeting and photo, McClellan was removed as Commander of the Army of the Potomac and replaced with General Ambrose Burnside, who led the Army to the disastrous defeat at Fredericksburg in December, 1862, and the infamous "Mud March" in January, 1863. Obviously this CDV was "jobbed out" and made up by a worker at the O. Monroe Photography Studio in Dunkirk, NY (South of Buffalo, along Lake Erie). The border style, back mark, card size, card color and tax stamp all indicate this was put together sometime in the 1864-1866 period. Commonly, customers requested CDVs of famous people and events from their local photographers, who in turn would make copies of the original pictures and apply them to their own card stock. The card measures 4" long by 2 3/8" wide. The tax stamp has a portion missing and the card back shows marks from being taped into an album, thus the explanation for the loss of the stamp piece. But it is an original card of this photographer, and a very historical photograph, so if you want to add one of this scene to your collection and not spend $2K+ for an original CDV, this is perfect for you.
