CIVIL WAR Antique 1840 NCO Sword
Description: CIVIL WAR Antique 1840 NCO Sword Civil War Dated “1862” Made by Christopher Roby Here we present an antique U.S. Model 1840 NCO Sword, made in 1862 by C. Roby for the American Civil War effort in W. Chelmsford, Massachusetts. The 1840 was a small, light and straight sword with a cast brass hilt. It was carried by non-commissioned officers in the Army during the American Civil War. Christopher Roby maintained a steady business making items like scythes and other farm implements until the embargo on the South during the American Civil War caused him to seek other product lines to make ends meet. In 1862 he began contracting with the U.S. to provide several different models of sword. His wartime production of swords numbered 48,410 compared to hundreds of thousands produced by companies like Ames. Roby was even commissioned on September 5, 1864 to raise up his own local cavalry, of which he was elected Captain, to be protectors against Confederate raids in northern Massachusetts. Unfortunately, the company was bankrupt by 1867, a mere 2 years after the end of the war. This sword is marked “C. ROBY/W. CHELMSFORD MS.” and “U.S./1862/F.S.S.” The overall condition of the sword is fine. The brass is very dark with age. The markings are clear and legible. The blade is bright. The leather scabbard is in three pieces, but has protected the blade for 156 years. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail! Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $600 #5149 SOLD |
