Civil War era Batty Martial Peace Powder Flask
Description: This is an original 1850 Batty soldier's powder flask in untouched condition. This flask is made of heavy copper capped with brass and was used for a Model 1844 Mississippi rifle. This was a popularly carried flask at the time, as it bears the famous Batty "Peace" symbol of two hands shaking surrounded by 20 stars, as seen on the Indian Peace Medals of the period. Above is a shield-breasted eagle with wings outstretched, arrows in his claws. Below but is another shield bearing U.S. with banners, armor and weapons behind it. This patriotic design is the same on both sides. This piece made it through the Civil War and beyond with no verdigris or major denting. The top of the flaks by the charger is stamped: “BATTY/ 1850 / A.D.K.” The powder lever spring is working fine. The flask measures just over 9-1/4in long, 4” wide and 1-1/2” thick in the swell. Please e-mail me with any questions. SOLD |
