Civil War Era US High Grade Medical Service Sword by Ames
Description: This is a very handsome sword that measures 36 1/2 inches overall, with a 30 inch straight, unfullered blade having 2/3 length etched panels. The steel has most of the original factory polish remaining with only some minor specks of freckling here and there near the tip. The etched panels depict an American eagle with E Pluribus Unum riband, martial panoply, medical Caduceus, and oak leaf spray motif on the obverse; and a smaller panoply with matching oak leaf spray on the revers. The ricasso is further marked with the “Ames Mfg. Co. / Chicopee / Mass." scroll maker marking on the reverse. The hilt has symmetrical foliate quillons, shield-shaped langets, and lobate grip with floral designs, eagle vignette, blank presentation escutcheon, and pineapple finial. The hilt retains 90-95% of the original bright gilt finish with very little wear present; mostly along the exposed edges. Unusually, the obverse langet does not, nor has it ever, been marked with the Gothic “MS" Medical Service insignia, only the stars, wreath, and stippled background are present. The “AMES MFG. CO. / CHICOPEE / MASS." marked metal scabbard likewise retains most of the original gilt finish, but does exhibit a small amount of verdigris on the reverse where some of the underlying brass has worn through. This is a very handsome example of a rare US military sword, and rates excellent condition overall. SOLD Manufacturer: Ames Model: Sword |
