Collins & Company US Model 1840 NCO Sword with Etched Blade Reading S.C. Ward... Civil War
Description: Lot Description Collins & Company US Model 1840 NCO Sword with Etched Blade Reading S.C. Ward American Civil War 27.5" double edged spear point blade with nearly full-length stopped median fuller. 34" in overall length with a 6.5" cast brass hilt with clam shell guard and counterguard. Reverse ricasso stamped with COLLINS & CO mark in an arch over HARTFORD/CONN/1862. Reverse blade etched with the Old English letters S C Ward. Includes a brass mounted steel scabbard. Heavy pitting from tip to mid way down. A search of Historical Data Systems civilwardata was inconclusive at best. Two men with the initials "SC" and the last name Ward served during the war as sergeants. Both named Samuel C Ward, one was the 2nd sergeant of Company H of the 33rd Iowa Volunteer Infantry and one was the 1st Sergeant of the 8th New York Cavalry. The second is less likely as a cavalry NCO would like not carry an infantry NCO sword. However their listings of middle initials with names is certainly far from complete and it is likely that other men named "S.C. Ward" saw service during the war. Further research may prove fruitful.
