This is an original, non-dug sand cast brass Confederate carbine sling buckle. It's missing the tongues and has a bit of bend on one side but it's genuine and presents very nicely. The tongues were simply strips of sheet brass bent around the bar so were not very durable and were easily separated from the bar. Has a great patina to the brass and the bar is intact.
I believe this buckle is shown in Steve Mullinax' CONFEDERATE BELT PLATES AND BUCKLES as plate No. 174 on page 100.
