Rare 1840's Chapeau of the Boston Independent Corps of Cadets
Description:
Fine condition Chapeau de Bras made by S. & H. A Rhoades, who were in business from 1828 to 1849 when they were sold to Bent and Bush. Made using beaver fur, the chapeau has an 1840’s Massachusetts Volunteer Militia brass insignia displaying the state crest on a black silk rosette. Unusual for chapeaus, it has a cloth and gold braid chinstrap. It retains the original maker label inside the crown. My research indicates that these chapeaux were made for the Independent Corps of Cadets, as Bazelon’s “Directory of American Military Goods Dealers and Makers 1785-1915” indicates Rhoades made chapeaus for the Corps in 1842. In their history, the Corps indicates they wore black chapeaus with white plumes at that time. A period print of the time depicts a Corps member wearing such a chapeau with the white plume and chinstrap. The person who sold me the chapeau also included a photocopy of the 1840 Massachusetts Militia Laws he owned with the chapeau, which had “Independent Corps of Cadets” written on the cover. Research and communication with the curator of the Independent Corps of Cadets Museum resulted in the following reply:

You are correct the white plume was used in the early 1840s and I thank you for pointing out that error… Upon further research I believe you are correct in the fact of the chapeau you possess to be an early 1840s Cadet chapeau. --
