Here we present an antique Artillery Short Sword with a Cast Rooster Handle, made circa the early-to-mid 19th Century. This sword was modeled after the Roman gladius, the iconic short sword of the Roman Legionaries. The revival of this blade design was a result of the rise of Neoclassicism during the Enlightenment in Europe and America in the 18th Century, continuing into the mid-19th Century. Art and monuments are perhaps the better-known products of the movement. By the 1800s, the American school curriculum was heavily based on the classics and ancient history. One could learn philosophy, reason, politics, history and be quite entertained with stories of heroes and great battles. It is against this backdrop that the North and the South entered into the Civil War, heads full of stories and ideas about courage, glory, heroism, and sacrifice.
This Model 1832 has the distinctive brass hilt with the fish scale pattern of grip. The cross-guard is simple with circular ends. The blade features a full-length fuller. The Roman gladius was generally a secondary weapon for use with a shield but that is not the way the French nor the Americans/Confederates used theirs. It was issued during the Civil War to the Artillery troops where it was more commonly used like a machete, but could still be used to defend oneself as a weapon of last resort. Many different variations emerged during the war due to so many small Confederate manufactories making them.
The overall condition is good. The hilt is solid all around. This example features a rooster cast into the pommel of the handle with a scale-textured grip. The overall length is 24-3/4 inches. The French version of this sword sometimes featured the rooster motif, though this looks like a period imitation of that design. The American Model 1832 featured a federal eagle. This one very well may have been an American Civil War sidearm made by the local blacksmith. A very interesting piece!
