U.S. Civil War Model 1850 Foot Officers Sword Identified to "Capt. William Barwick, 173rd Ret. N.Y. Vols.
Description: A U.S. Civil War Model 1850 Foot Officers Sword Identified To "Capt. William Barwick, 173rd Regt. N.Y. Vols." Inside Of A Shield In The Top Scabbard Mount In Very Good Condition. All original & Complete. The sword has a very good blade and etching with U.S. Motifs on it. The original grip and brass guard are nice and untouched. The scabbard is also very good throughout with untouched brass fittings on it. The top mount has a large shield on it and is inscribed, "CAPT. WM. BARWICK/CO. A 173D REG./N.Y. VOLS. 1861 TO 1865". The mount is also engraved around the shield. The middle mount and brass drag are also engraved. The drag has a Spread Winged American Eagle holding a shield on it along with the other engraving. The entire sword has a very even and untouched look throughout it. Capt. Barwick had fine history throughout the war. He entered as a Sergant in August 1862 and rose through the ranks to Lieut and then Captain. He did not muster out until october of 1865. There is no doubt that he carried this sword throughout the war as it shows definite wear and use throughout. His regiment was very activ at Port Hudson and Pleasant Hill.
