"Historically Important Indian War Club Surrendered by Little Big Horn Chief Gall Ex. Smithsonian (75477) 

Description:
"This is a period war club from the 1860s-1870 with a 4.79"" wide stone head and measures approximately 29.5"" in overall length  to the end of the haft and another approximate 20"" leather and horse hair  drop. This is an historically important war club owned by Chief Gall and formerly in the collection of the Chicago Historical Society and was once loaned and displayed at the National Portrait Gallery in the Smithsonian Museum. It also was on a five year loan to the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyoming. This Club was given to Lieutenant  William Wallace Robisnon presumably at Fort Buford during Gal's surrender in 1881. The club has the inscription on the leather band holding the stone head in place ""Presented to Lt Robinson / Chief Gall"" on the haft is the inscription    ""For Its ???er"" This earlier has been deciphered as ""For its Bearer"" The final inscription is on the leather drop that reads ""Compliments of the Lieutenant  to Miss Paulie"" There is a letter from the Curator of Weapons that has the final inscription as reading ""Compliments of the Lieutenant to Miss Fannie"" but we believe this was read incorrectly due to the genealogical evidence and the the difficulty reading the inscription. There are inventory markings on the stone itself from the Chicago Historical Society (Now Call the Chicago History Museum). It was sold or traded out of the Chicago historical society to Collector and  Dealer Arnold Chernoff. Numerous native american guns and items were traded to Mr. Chernoff including Crazy Horse's Winchester and Sitting Bull's Trapdoor. Accompanying this gun is a letter from the Curator of Weapons at the Chicago Historical Society Herbert Houze detailing the provenance. It says it was donated by Dr. George James  and that the  Dr James  received it  by E. K. Robinson, the  sone of W. W. Robinson.    Based on the genealogy, there have been either some misspellings  in the donation forms that Curator Herbert  Houze was reading and possibly how the donation forms were transcribed. Dr. George James was in fact the husband of  Pauline Ten Eycks Shoals James (Miss Paulie)  who was  the niece of    Lieutenant William Wallace Robinson.  Dr. James passed away in 1932, two year  before this club was donated. The E. K. Robinson was Edward Gordon Robinson, the grandson of Lieutenant William Wallace Robinson.  Edward Gordon Robinson died a young man in March of 1934 at 29 year old. Most likely, Pauline James  donated this club along with Chief Big Foot's Ghost Dance shirt in honor of her husband  and the Lieutenant's grandson. This is a very significant piece of history and this club could possibly been used at the battle of the little big horn. Chief Gall  said when asked about the battle of the little big Horn, said  ""We soon shot all  of our Cartridges and then shot arrows and used war clubs.... I killed a great many. I killed them all with my hatchet. I did not use a gun."" This Club comes with extensive documentation including the history from the Chicago Historical society, the loan papers from the Smithsonian, A man at arms article mentioning the war club as being a piece of the exhibit on loan at the buffalo bill historical Center Museum, a pamphlet from a display of guns used at the Little Big Horn by the Pennsylvania Antique Gun Collectors Association as well as numerous biographical documentation of both William Wallace Robinson and Chief Gall.  This truly is a museum piece  that has already been displayed at the very top Museum institutions!
