Springfield Armory Model 1902 Army Officer's Saber
Description:
This Model 1902 Army Officers Saber was made by the Springfield Armory in 1903 or 1904. Springfield produced only 5,735 of these sabers between 1903 and 1918. (Some texts state that Springfield ended manufacture of the Model 1902 in 1914.) Springfield used five different manufacturer signatures during the production period and the signature on this saber is the earliest type, which places its production in 1903 or 1904.
This saber has an overall length of 37.25 inches with a slightly curved 32 inch blade that is 0.875 inches wide and 0.25 inches thick just above the guard. Overall, the blade is in excellent condition with well defined scroll work etchings along both sides. The blade has no nicks or scratches (other than from scabbard wear). There is a tranished area about 2 inches long on the obverse side near the tip of the blade, which can be seen in one of the pictures. The etchings on the reverse side include an eagle with "E PLURBIUS UNUM" under its wings and on the obverse side, "US" and "Springfield / Armory / Springfield Mass. U.S.A." The grip is black wood and is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. The hilt is in very good condition as can be seen in the pictures.
Attached to the knuckle bow is a brown leather portepee, which is in nice condition.
The unmarked scabbard is in very good condition with some minor surface scratches from handling and storage.
It is the responsibility of the buyer to make sure that he/she is in compliance with any state or local restrictions on the purchase of this saber.
