British Pattern 1857 Royal Engineers Sword by Wilkinson
Description: This is a handsome sword that measures 37" overall, with a 32" slightly curved, single-edged blade having wide single fullers and decorative etched panels. This is a handsome and well-proportioned sword that has a bright blade with identical floral scrollwork-bordered, "(Crown) / VR" cypher panels on either side of the forte, as well as a lion head vignette on the obverse forte. The ricasso has a Damascus Star and proof on the obverse, with a faint, but still legible Wilkinson maker’s mark and address on the reverse. The hilt has the distinctive "honeysuckle" pattern of the Royal Engineers on the pierced metal guard with a single forward swept cylindrical quillon. The guard would have been engraved with texture along the exterior surface originally, but those have since been polished almost completely away, and only traces remain near the pommel now. The shagreen grip has a loose, but intact double strand wire wrap, and there is a crosshatch pattern in the metal on the pommel, backstrap, and grip ferrule. The sword is housed in the original steel undress scabbard that has a mixed gray and ruddy brown patina, darkest between the hanger rings, and a few shallow dents near the drag. This is a good example of a desirable British sword.; Price: $595.00 Contact Seller |
