Indian Wars Era U.S. Model 1860 Staff & Field Sword by Ames
Description: This is a handsome sword that measures 35 1/2" overall, with a 29" straight, diamond cross-section blade having half-length etched panels on both sides. The blade is in very good condition having bright original factory polish remaining and lovely etched panels with foliate scrollwork having an American eagle on the obverse, and owner’s name on the reverse: "LIEUT. D.H. Clark." There are some areas of mild freckling along its length, most noticeably at the tip and on the ricasso, which has the Ames markings on the obverse. The hilt is in very good-fine condition with about 50% of the original gilt finish remaining, and an intact shagreen grip with complete braided wire wrap. The counterguard is of the folding type and the metal scabbard has most of the nickel plate finish remaining, with some freckling scattered throughout, as well as an area of bubbling about 12" up from the chape. A period embroidered bullion sword knot is also included. This is a handsome, Indian Wars era sword and is in very good-fine overall condition. SOLD |
