Swiss Infantry Hanger by Horster
Description:
This is a handy short saber that measures 32 3/4" overall, with a 27 1/2" curved, single-edge blade with long single fullers and a 7" false edge at the tip. The steel has an overall mottled gray patina with some dark brown freckling and small areas of pitting, mostly on either side of the foible. The ricasso is serial numbered on the obverse ("5309"), with maker’s mark below: "E&F HORSTER / SOLINGEN." The ricasso reverse has a single small Swiss Cross stamp. The hilt has a single forward-swept quillon, reverse "P" knucklebow, shagreen grip with intact braided wire wrap, and a dove head pommel with exposed capstan rivet. The saber is housed in its original steel and leather scabbard that has a Neuhausen marking on the throat, and a scuffed, but intact leather body. A somewhat tattered red and white portepee is also included. This is a very good, seldom seen Swiss hanger, and would make a great addition to a collection.
