World War II Pacific theatre paratrooper or Pilot Survival Cattaraugus folding machete with original blade protector
Description: World War II Pacific theatre paratrooper or Pilot Survival Cattaraugus folding machete with original blade protector. This machete came from the estate of a WWII veteran along with an M-1 carbine and I was told that it was a paratrooper machete for parachuting onto heavily jungled Pacific islands. But I have seen some quite like this marked “pilot survival machete.” Very dark brown wood-sided handle with what appears to be heavy shellac finish is 5-3/8 inch long by 1-1/4 inch wide held on with 3 small iron pins and two larger iron pins. Steel hand guard 2-7/8 inches long. Blade is 10 inches long and has the original protective black-painted cover over the sharp edge that fits snugly and can be pulled away when the blade is folded out. There is a large center channel with a bending spring that retains the blade and protector and pushes over to allow them to be folded back in. Machete has a overall length with blade open of 15-1/2 inches. Blade is marked Cattaraugus/USA in a fancy cursive style. Condition is fine. Blade is shiny steel finish with no pitting or staining. About 5% of the black paint has worn off the blade protector on one side and about 20% on the other side. Spring is very good. Lock up is tight and strong. SOLD |
