Cigarette Case Presented to Gen. William Westmoreland Prior to the Tet Offensive
Description: This is an attractive, highly ornate all-metal case that measures 5 1/8" x 3 1/8" x 1/2" with single keeper arm, and bright silver interior. The lid is neatly engraved on the interior with the crest of the Royal Thai Armed Forces and, "To Gen. William C. Westmoreland / With the Compliments of / Field Marshal T. Kittikachorn / (Thanom Kittikachorn) / Supreme Commander of the Royal Thai Armed Forces / January, 1968." Also included is one of Gen. Westmoreland’s post-retirement business cards. William Childs Westmoreland (1914 & 2005) graduated from West Point in 1936, and saw combat service in both WW2 and the Korean War. He became commander of Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV) in June, 1964. Westmoreland presided over a massive build-up of US troops in-country, and his upbeat and positive assessment of US efforts in Vietnam caused him to be named TIME magazine’s Person Of The Year for 1965, and even floated as a potential Republican candidate for president in 1968. January of 1968, the month he was presented with this case, was a tumultuous one for Westmoreland and MACV. The months-long Battle of Khe Sanh began on the 21st, and the first phase of the Tet Offensive, the turning point of America’s involvement in Vietnam, commenced only nine days later. He was appointed to the post of Army Chief of Staff in June and was succeeded at MACV by Gen. Creighton Abrams. This is a great piece of US military history, presented to one of the most famous US Army generals of the Cold War era very close to the defining moment of his greatest command. It would make a fantastic addition to any collection. SOLD |
