Winchester 37 x 120R Hotchkiss M1879 Revolving Cannon Round with Projectile
Description: This Winchester round was designed for a version of the Hotchkiss 5-barrel revolving cannon, this saw US service between 1878 and 1900. France did not acquire this gun but the US Navy purchased 77 examples, the US Army 19, the latter seeing action in the Indian Wars, in Cuba and in the Philippines. Initially the round used a coiled brass case, but in 1891 a drawn brass case was introduced, all of the known examples being made in this year by the Winchester Repeating Arms Co, as a result of which the cartridge is sometimes referred to as the 37 mm Winchester. The case length measured 119.5 mm so the round may be designated 119 or 120 mm. The case is in very good+ condition with no spits and the projectile is in excellence condition with most of the original red paint. Dated on the case "5-91" and on the projectile "4-91", patent day November, 14-76. Overall length with the common shell loaded was 204 mm. The round is inert but still has a live primer.; SOLD |
