Presentation Powder Horn for the Ancient Order of Foresters 1831
Description: This is a small, nicely patinated horn that has two tarnished pewter reinforcing bands, a pewter stag-head inlay, and an engraved, shield-shaped presentation plaque: "THOMAS FOWLER / Initialed / Ancient Order / of / Foresters / 1831". The horn is intact, but does have a series of branching stress cracks running up from the coiled leather base. The cracks are stable and the base has some flaking and fraying. The Ancient Order of Foresters was formed in 1834, post-dating the presentation date, however the Order was formed when the Royal Foresters Society was formally amalgamated under the new name. It is therefore assumed that Mr. Fowler was a member of the Royal Foresters prior to the change of name. This is an attractive little presentation horn, and would make a nice addition to a collection. SOLD Manufacturer: Foresters Model: Powder Horn |
