1870 USN MARKED BAYONET AND LEATHER SCABBARD FOR REM./SPRINGFIELD 1870 ROLLING BLOCK NAVY .50-70 RIFLE
Description: EXCELLENT CONDITION EXTREMELY RARE 1870 USN MARKED BAYONET AND LEATHER SCABBARD FOR THE REMINGTON/SPRINGFIELD 1870 ROLLING BLOCK U. S. NAVY .50-70 RIFLE. One of the most beautifully crafted and designed U. S. bayonets, these have full brass handles and guards with naval anchor motif. They are made to fit the bayonet lug on the bottom of the Rolling Block barrel and have a hole in the handle where the cleaning rod fits. The 20" double edged blade is bright with no rust or evidence of sharpening. Ahead of the handle is correctly marked USN/GSS/1870 on one side, the other side is marked AMES MFG CO/CHICOPEE/MASS. The handle with fish scale grip shows no sign of ever being polished, is inspector stamped with a small "S" and "GSS" like the blade. It displays a pleasing mellow patina. The steel snap/clip to hold the bayonet to the lug is intact. The leather and brass scabbard shows age, but is solid with rigid leather. Only the small brass belt butt on is missing from the top portion. Interestingly, these scabbards did not last long on shipboard and in January of 1874 the navy ordered 1,000 replacement scabbards. these are pictured and described in the book RIFLES OF THE UNITED STATES NAVY AND MARINE CORPS by John McAulay. The rifles are scarce and the bayonets are even more so! A truly remarkable bayonet and scabbard. SOLD |
