Description:
This is a Cadet socket bayonet, that was made for the approximately 4,000 E. S. Allin conversion rifles, made for the 1866 and 1869 muskets. These muskets were converted into breech-loading rifles, to US 50-70 caliber, at the Springfield Armory. This bayonet is in very good original condition and is one of two variants made. The overall length is 18" with a 14 5/8" blade and 3" socket with a muzzle diameter of .767". There is very little original finish on the bayonet which has turned to a brown gray, minor ding with the ricasso marked "US s" and the socket, "A" behind the locking ring and "17" on the right side. This bayonet comes in an early short loop Hoffman Device made at "Watervliet Arsenal" 1871 and is so marked with the lower half of a "Emerson & Silver" Stamp on the short loop, it reads "10 over 1862 over Trenton N.J." Both the metal body and the frog are in very good condition with light surface oxidation, one dent on the back and light verdigris on the hardware and nice pliable leather. This can be referenced in "American Socket Bayonet and Scabbards" book by R. Reilly pg.101 and 166.;
