Scarce Parade US M1873 Socket Bayonet Trapdoor Rifle Dress McKinney’s
Description:
This is a very good+ condition US M1873 Trapdoor Socket Bayonet with a dress parade scabbard and white leather frog. The 18" blade retains almost all of the original finish with US on the ricasso, blade is nearly free of any imperfections, only light marks from age with light oxidation. The 3" socket is in very good condition with light marks from use. The rare nickle scabbard was patented by "McKENNEY’S PAT./JUN. 12 1886" and is so stamped into the upper lip. This scabbard design was not adopted by the War Department "but it is believed McKinney’s entered into contracts with New York and Pennsylvania to supply scabbards" from the book "American Socket Bayonets and Scabbards" Reilly, 1990, page 177. The excellent body retains most of the nickle plating with some signs of use. The white leather is in very good condition with flexibility and nice movement on the pivot which has a copper hanger. According to Reilly there would have been very few of this variant produced being so late in the socket bayonet history and even fewer of these parade variants. A must for any Trapdoor collection.;
