Springfield Arsenal 1906 bayonet with 16" blade.
Description:
Model 1905, Springfield Arsenal (SA) bayonet dated 1906 with serial # 154771. An OUTSTANDING example of an arsenal re-finished 1906 SA bayonet. After WW1, existing bayonets in stock were turned into arsenals for refinishing and repair. They were then put into stock and re-issued at the beginning of WW11. This bayonet has the gray/black finish typical of the 1917 parkerizing method used until about mid 1943. It has been sharpened on both the lower and upper “false” edge. No rust or pitting anywhere. Inside the grips has remnants of the yellow-brownish storage material called cosmoline, a mixture of wax and grease. It has been removed from the blade. Original wood grips are in excellent condition with very few dings or dents. There are no chips. Both grips have uniform “ribbing” and exhibit about the same appearance.
The scabbard cover is the “1910 type” with the second variation hanger which has the heavier wire and canvas covering. The canvas is of the woven “tube” type with no seam indicating is was made post 1912. The scabbard is comprised of a wooden core, rawhide inner cover and an outer canvas cover. The canvas cover appears original but the rawhide cover over the wood is missing on about the top third plus the forward edge of the wood under the missing rawhide has a crack and small piece of the wood missing. See photos. The canvas is uniformly aged and the leather tip is near perfect. There is the typical half inch of the inner scabbard showing at the throat due to the shrinkage of the canvas cover. All seams are tight. This type of scabbard was discontinued in 1944.
