Springfield Arsenal original 1908 bayonet set with leather scabard
Description: Model 1905, Springfield Arsenal (SA) bayonet dated 1908 with serial # 322,768. Bayonet has ORIGINAL FINISH consisting of a bright blade with a horizontal band of bluing just below the cross guard. Bright finish blades were standard until 1917 after which they were blued. Bayonet has been sharpened on both the lower and upper “false” edge. There are a couple of very light nicks in the sharpened edge on the bottom. No rust or pitting anywhere. Bluing on cross guard and grip area has faded to a dark blue-black finish. Wooden grips are in excellent condition with just a few light surface dings on the right (outer) side. There are no chips and the corrugated ribs are distinct. A coating of brownish cosomoline (a preservative for storage) can still be seen under the grips but most has been removed to expose the bright blade. The scabbard is a RARE “Model 1905, second type” with the metal hanger. It has not been modified to fit the hook type pistol belt. Made in 1907 until 1911 with the single drain hole on the bottom tip of the scabbard. The scabbard leather is still flexible and soft however there is some type of surface damage about one third of the way down from the top. The back of the scabbard is stamped, R.I.A. over 1908 over T.C. There is a variety of minor scrapes, bruises, dings on the surface of the leather. All seams are tight. Three rivets on front of metal hanger. The bluing on the exposed metal “throat” of the scabbard has faded to a lighter color on the front than the back. A nice surviving 1908 set with a custom made blue felt storage sock. Shipping charge will be to buyer zip code via priority mail. Payment accepted is postal or bank check or money order. Personal checks accepted with shipping withheld until check clears. No credit card or Paypal SOLD |
