US M1873 Trapdoor Socket Bayonet and Scabbard "McKenney’s" NY
Description:
This is an excellent condition US M1873 Trapdoor Socket Bayonet with original scabbard and frog. The 18" blade retains almost all of the original finish with just a dot on the ricasso, blade is nearly free of any imperfections, only light marks from age with no oxidation. The 3" socket is in very good condition with light marks from use and one single "A" on the top. The rare scabbard was patented by "McKENNEY’S PAT./JUN. 12 1886" and is so stamped into the upper lip. This scabbard design was not adopted by the War Department "but it is believed McKinney’s entered into contracts with New York and Pennsylvania to supply scabbards" from the book "American Socket Bayonets and Scabbards" Reilly, 1990, page 177. The excellent body retains almost all of the original paint with light signs of use. The leather is very good condition with flexibility and nice movement on the pivot. There is tiny worm holes but not structural. According to Reilly there would have been very few of this variant produced being so late in the socket bayonet history.;
