US Model 1855 Sprocket Bayonet
Description: The US Model 1855 sprocket bayonet was used by the US military leading into and during the Civil War and fit the .58 caliber US Model 1855, 1861, and 1863 rifle-muskets. It also fit the post-Civil War .50 caliber Model 1866 rifles that had the Allin Conversion, which became known as the Springfield Trapdoor rifle. The US military later replaced the Model 1855 with the Model 1873 bayonet that fit the.45-70 caliber US Model 1873 Trapdoor rifle. 1855 bayonets were produced in the bright, whereas, 1873 bayonets were blued. The Model 1855 bayonet shown here is in the bright. It has dark spots on the blade but is not rusty or bent and the tip is not damaged. The locking mechanism works smoothly. It is stamped "U-S" on one side of the blade, "I.C." on the other side, and "R" on the sprocket. There is what appears to be a casting flaw on the locking ring, as can be seen in the last picture. The flaw is not all the way across the ring and does not affect the ring's function. This bayonet displays nicely and for the price would be a nice addition to a Civll War or bayonet collection. For a Civil War 1863 rifle-musket that would go nicely with this bayonet, please see Guns International listing number 102559410.
