US Model 1870 Navy Bayonet
Description: This is the Type II bayonet for the .50 caliber, Model 1870 Rolling Block Navy Rifle, and measures 24 3/4" overall, with a 20 1/8" straight, double-edged blade having 3/4 length central fullers. The steel has an overall mottled gray patina with scattered areas of dark freckling, and deposits of dried, protective grease along both sides of the blade. The ricasso has the Ames "Scroll" trademark on the ricasso reverse, while the obverse has "U.S.N. / GGS / 1870" naval markings. The cast brass hilt has a mellow yellow-ochre tarnish, and a noticeable dent on the quillon finial. The press-stud is still functional, and both the "GGS" and "IA" inspector stamps are still legible. The leather and brass scabbard is in fair shape with shallow dents on the throat and chape (which is missing the frog stud), and some minor crazing along the black leather body. Additionally, the leather near the tip has an old tape repair. This is a good-very good example of a scarce US Navy bayonet. SOLD Manufacturer: Spfld Model: Bayonet |
