Ames Cut Down 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber
Description: Cut Down RARE Ames-Produced Model 1840 "Wristbreaker" Cavalry Sword (Dated 1848) Exactly 20" long Blade ( Double-Edged near the tip!) Exactly 24" Total Length Legible "AMES" maker-markings, "US", Martial Inspection Stampings (on Ricasso and Pommel), clear "1848" Production Date. Chocolate smooth patina. No leather wrapping remains. There isn't a collector, enthusiast, nor historian alive who doesn't know just how desperate the South was in equipping it's Forces. Among the many such examples, we have here a a rare specimen--and likely piece of Confederate ingenuity. The already Rare and desirable Ames-produced Model 1840 "Heavy Cavalry Saber", being dated 1848, bears ALL the legible markings for an Ames-produced sword ("US" with martial inspector's initials on the ricasso, with the Ames address and production date, then the other two distinct martial inspector initials upon the top of the pommel). Being already 13 years old when war broke-out (and the Model 1840 saber was the most widely used of the Confederacy, since they were already in production since 1840, and filled within Southern state arsenals and militias). "Wristbreaker" Heavy Cavalry Saber cut-down to exactly 20" blade, With a double edge from the tip to several inches in the blade. Nothing is broken, damaged, repaired, and it's 100% tight.
