Civil War Era Ames Model Staff Officer Sword w/ Blued Scabbard, Very Nice Looking
Description: Great looking Civil War era Ames Model 1860 Staff Officer’s Sword. Often erroneously referred to as the Model 1860 Staff and Field Officer’s Sword, this sword was regulation use until 1902, and as such, most of them you find are actually post-Civil War. This one has all the correct attributes that identify it as an early example of the Civil War era. On the hilt of the sword, the back of the folding counterguard is plain with no decoration. The scabbard is blued and not nickel plated. The scabbard has a single ring mount at the top, not double rings. The scabbard ring mounts are not decorated on the reverse side. The scabbard drag is plain without decoration. The hilt retains its sharkskin grip and wire wrap. The spring button (often missing or broken on these swords) that allows for the counter guard to be folded down or locked into place, is present and fully functional. The etching is strong and beautiful. The blade washer may be a modern replacement. This sword was likely made for or purchased by an officer of shorter stature as what would have normally been a 31-inch blade has been professionally shortened to 29 inches. You can only tell this by actually measuring and looking closely at the thickness at the tip of the blade. The scabbard has been similarly shortened. Please take a look at all the photos as they provide the best description of condition. Shipping to the lower 48 contiguous states. Three day return privilege, buyer pays return shipping. Shipping cost $40 towards Priority Mail with full insurance. SOLD |
