Civil War Era Model 1852 Navy Officer Sword & Scabbard, Mint Blade, Scarce Maker/Retailer
Description: Offered here is the most pristine Civil War era Model 1852 Navy Officer’s sword that I have ever seen, and by a relatively scarce maker/retailer to boot. It is made by the Gorham Manufacturing Company, founded in 1831, jewelers primarily known for their silver sets and silver flatware, but they also sold swords to well-to-do clientele. I've only seen a handful of Gorham made swords in my years of collecting, and I those have typically been 1850 Staff & Field officer swords. I have never seen a Gorham navy. Like a lot of part-time sword makers during the Civil War, Gorham tended to use blades made by Collins & Company. While Collins-made blades are commonly found on Cavalry, Foot Officer, and Staff & Field Officer swords, Collins-made Navy blades are very rare. The blade of this sword is stunning, in mint condition with full frosting, and it is one you will never have to update. As jewelers, the Gorham Company paid attention to detail in construction. Take a look at the detail in the casting of the hilt. It looks like they then did additional hand chasing on the dolphin scales, oak leaves, and acorns. I love the oversized rope ornaments and oversized dolphin drag on the scabbard. The scabbard is strong with just the slightest crazing in a couple spots. The scabbard throat has the Gorham maker mark stamped on the reverse side. Please take a look at all the photos as they provide the best description of condition. Shipping to the lower 48 contiguous states. Three day return privilege, buyer pays return shipping. Price of shipping $45.00 towards the cost of Priority Mail with full insurance. SOLD |
