CONFEDERATE NAVY BATTLE DAMAGED CUTLASS AND CSS TENNESSEE FRAMED PRINT FREE SHIPPING!!!
Description: CONFEDERATE NAVY BATTLE DAMAGED CUTLASS AND CSS TENNESSEE FRAMED PRINT FREE SHIPPING!!! This is an A. Dufilho (well known New Orleans swordmaker) Confederate Naval Cutlass and a large framed art print of the ironclad CSS Tennessee in battle at Mobile Bay by Tom Freeman. These are paired because the verbal provenance of the cutlass is that it was brought home to the Northeast after the Civil War by a Union sailor who had been on the USS Hartford at the Battle of Mobile Bay and captured the cutlass aboard CSS Tennessee after she was surrendered. In later years he moved to Mobile because he had been fond of the area. The cutlass turned up in modern times at a yard sale in Mobile. The story adds up because of the beating Tennessee took from the Federal fleet and the fact that the damage is undoubtedly very old. Confederate Naval Cutlasses didn't become valuable until relatively recently so there would have been no point to anyone damaging one to increase the value. The damage is very convincing! The bill of sale I received many years ago has "CSS Tennessee" written on it but that's all. It will be provided to the buyer. The cutlass is badly damaged showing the level of violence involved in ironclad Naval warfare during the Civil War; the guard is loose and cracked from impact, the counterguard has been torn off and at the point where it was torn from the guard there is melting from extreme heat (fire), there is a shrapnel crease/dent in the reverse side of the grip and the blade has a very slight bend to the left. The cutlass itself is still very presentable and has been one of the centerpieces of my Confederate Naval collection for almost 30 years. It is verified as having been made by Dufilho because these cutlasses made by Dufilho all have a distinctive curve ending in a notch on the reverse side of the guard. The one for sale here is not maker marked which is common on Confederate blades of all types. Very few of Dufilho's blades are marked but are normally identified by style matching the rare marked examples. It measures 26" overall with a blade length of 20-3/4" and width of 1-5/8". The brass all has a very even and attractive "chocolate" tone patina and exhibits the crude manufacturing that we all love to see in Confederate relics. the blade is dark with very old surface rust and light pitting overall. These cutlasses are often referred to as "Selma Arsenal" manufacture, I assume because examples were recovered along with other artifacts near the location of the arsenal. There is a ”Selma Arsenal type Confederate naval cutlass but they are different from the Dufilho’s. This also contributes to the provenance of the cutlass for sale here since CSS Tennessee was built in Selma. Examples of these cutlasses marked or not are extremely rare! I have included three photos of a non-damaged Dufilho cutlass for reference (the ones of the cutlass on a navy blue backdrop). The art print of CSS Tennessee included in this sale is titled "The Giant of Mobile Bay". There are numerous notations printed on it identifying the vessels depicted, date of the battle, etc. It also has the seal of the Confederate Naval Museum (now Civil War Naval Museum). It is a limited edition print of 950, this one being numbered 178 of 950 and is signed by the artist. The overall dimensions of the frame are 28-1/2" tall by 37" wide. The actual image size is 19-1/4" X 27". These two items make an impressive display together! I will also include the two black walnut display wall mounts I have used for this cutlass for many years. THIS RARE, HISTORIC CONFEDERATE CUTLASS AND ART PRINT ARE BEING OFFERED FOR AROUND THE MARKET PRICE OF AN AVERAGE, RUN-OF-THE-MILL CONFEDERATE MANUFACTURED NAVAL CUTLASS!! I am liquidating my extensive collection of Civil War relics after 30 years collecting in preparation for retirement. Look for more exciting and rare Civil War items from my collection. PLEASE NOTE: THIS CUTLASS IS ALSO AVAILABLE FOR $1699 WITHOUT THE ART PRINT IF YOU PREFER, JUST EMAIL ME AND I CAN CHANGE THE LISTING. ALL SALES FINAL! RETURNS NOT ACCEPTED!! PERSONAL CHECKS WILL NEED TO CLEAR MY BANK ACCOUNT PRIOR TO SHIPMENT. PAYMENT DUE WITHIN 5 DAYS OF PURCHASE. NO INTERNATIONAL SALES OR SHIPMENTS. SOLD |
