Early Civil War Cook & Co. N.O. Confederate Cutlass
Description: Revising this listing... I think this was an import item very early in the Civil War and not actually manufactured in the south or possible the blade was an import, who knows. Absolutely an early/mid 19th century made piece. Having done a fair amount of research on this item, I have been able to find only two other examples of this exact cutlass on the internet or anywhere, one with a wood scabbard, metal throat and drag. I found another Confederate cutlass with an almost identical blade/fuller design/configuration by Courtney & Tennant a South Carolina maker that imported blades primarily English made. Almost the same blade on the Cutlasses they imported. I am trained as a machineist and as such recognize the specialized heavy equipment and types of different manufacturing steps required to create this item, fifteen or more manufacturing steps alone, and that doesn't include the scabbard or several other steps required to make this. Another example that was ed about ten years ago by Rock Island had a wood scabbard with sheet metal throat and drag.....Use the following search term to locate that Cutlass sold on Rock Island's site that had a letter from the family and a scabbard. Morphy's sold one of these also but had no history and just the sword.Cook& Co. N.O. Confederate Cutlass for Sale Rock Island. The guy at Arizona swords shows a picture of one of these as a fake but the picture he references is actually copy pasted and reversed from an old Morphy auctiion picture of one of these. He has never actually personally examined the sword he makes claims about from what I can determine. I asked him that question, if he had personally examined the one he references but never got an answer. And compared to the old picture the AzSwords pic is identical except reversed. The parts on this sword have great natural patina and aging. If you have one of these or pictures or know specific information about this item, please contact me, and I appreciate that. Thanks, Mark $50.00 for S&H in the continental U.S. SOLD |
