An Early Civil War U.S. Model 1850 Staff & Field Officers Sword Inscribed & Presented On The top Mount To "Major Joseph N. Peirsol Of The 1st Regiment Gray Reserves Dated 1862" In Nice Untouched Original Condition. The sword is all original & complete. It has a nice blade and etching showing some use. The scabbard in nice throughout with a wonderful patina on it. It is also very untouched. The inscription on the top mount is in 5 lines as shown in the photos. Major Peirsol was appointed in July 1862 & was presented the sword on September 17, 1862. The unit served as a critical home guard and nucleus for volunteer forces. During the civil war the regiment was federally mobilized during battles and emergencies. They are as follows:
In 1862 They mustered into federal service as the 7th Penn. Militia to counter Robert E. Lee's invasion of Maryland.
In 1863 during the Gettysburg Campaign They mustered in as the 32nd. PA. Militia to defend the state during this time. Major Piersol served on the regiment's Staff & Field roster alongside Col. Peter C. Ellmaker, Lt. Col. Charles M. Provost, and Adjutant William H, Keys.
