B).......Tarred canvas Knapsack identified to one Charles H. Pond of the 2nd Connecticut Volunteer Infantry Regiment. White paint on the outer face of the flap reads ''2 / Ct. V.'' in large letters. The coating is dry and somewhat stiff, with instances of cracking and very slight flaking throughout. Buckle has separated from strap. The interior is age-yellowed, as expected, with a few scattered stains here or there but otherwise rates excellent. The initials ''C.H. Pond'' are written in several places including on the rear face between the carrying strap loops, the interior face of the fold-out main flap and on the rear face of a strip of oilcloth stitched to the inside of the main pocket. One of the carrying straps has been lost; the other is dry and lightly crazed, a bit delicate in spots, but overall remains whole with no major loss or blemishes. Records show that Charles H. Pond enlisted on April 23, 1861 as a private. On May 7, 1861 he mustered into ''F'' Co. of the CT 2nd Volunteer Infantry. He was mustered out on August 7, 1861 at New Haven, CT.
