James E. Taylor Sketchbook: With Sheridan Up the Shenandoah Valley in 1864 : Leaves from a Special Artist's Sketchbook and Diary
Description: James E. Taylor Sketchbook: With Sheridan Up the Shenandoah Valley in 1864 : Leaves from a Special Artist's Sketchbook and Diary (Western Reserve Historical Society Publication, 1st and only edition, 1989) James Edward Taylor (1839-1901) was an artist and correspondent with Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper during the American Civil War. He was assigned to cover the campaign of General Phillip Sheridan in the Shenandoah Valley beginning in August,1864. Taylor kept copious notes and made over 500 narrative sketches and drawings reflecting his esxperiences while serving with Sheridan. His notes and sketches reflect heroic encounters, tragic deaths, thrilling victories, defeats, and all manner of everyday military and civilian life. He also described many natural wonders, history buildings and other Valley features. Unfortunately, most of his memoirs and artistry was lost for generations. Finally discovered anew by the Western Reserve Historical Society in forgotten storage, it was collected and published in this book form in a single limited 1st edition. It has since been acclaimed by historicans as a unique time capsule for the period, but has never been republished. The book totals 631 pages with text and plates, weighs 5.2 pounds and is 12 1/4 x 9 1/4 ". This particular example is fully intact in all respects, internally and externally. The price of $225 includes the cost of USPS shipping to an adress within the continental USA. Payment is by Zelle or USPS money order. SOLD |
