Model 1832 Foot Artillery Sword with Massachusetts Markings, Only 311 Made
Description: Ames Model 1832 Foot Artillery Sword, no scabbard, dated 1839 and with Massachusetts "MS" ownership markings stamped on the cross guard. This style sword was used as the Infantry NCO sword until the Model 1840 NCO sword became available in the mid 1840's. In 1839 the Federal Government provided 311 foot artillery swords for state militia quotas. It is assumed that all 311 likely went to Massachusetts and have these "MS" markings. One side of the blade is stamped with an eagle over "N. P. AMES" over "SPRINGFIELD", the other side "UNITED" over "STATES" over "1839" over "JH". The face of the hilt has the correct inspector initials of "MPL" and "WS", as well as the "ORD" Ordnance stamping. The "MS" stamping on the crossguard is a bit weak. At some point someone attempted to use the butt of the sword to hammer something, casuing a bit of separation of the two brass halves at the pommel tang. You do need to be careful when considering a purchase of an "MS" marked Foot Artillery sword, as for some reason fakes were made. With some study you can identify the fakes as the eagles on the hilt look like large beaked parrots, the eagle on the blade looks like a scrawny necked chicken, and the spacing of the blade stamping is wrong. This one is the real deal, and with only 311 real ones out there, is a relatively scarce sword. Please take a look at all the photos as they provide the best description. Shipping to the lower contiguous 48 states. Shipping cost $30.00. SOLD |
