Rare Wilmot's Patent Tompion for Civil War Musket
Description:
Offered is a rare Wilmot’s Patent .58 caliber tompion for a Civil War musket. Tompions were used to keep dirt and water from getting into the barrel of a musket. While most Civil War tompions were simply made of wood, this unique design uses a brass top and bottom that are connected by a threaded brass rod. In between the two ends is an India Rubber center covered in coarse wool. When the tompion was tightened by screwing the top portion towards the bottom portion, the rubber center would expand to fill the muzzle of the musket. The tompion is marked “PATENTED NOV. 24 1863”. The knurled knob on the top of this one is stamped with the number “36”, perhaps to correspond with the musket it was assigned to. This in an interesting musket implement that is missing from many Civil War gun tool collections and would look great displayed in the barrel of your Civil War musket. Please take a look at all the photos as they provide the best description of condition. Shipping to the lower 48 contiguous states.
