Scarce Ames Model 1840 Foot Officer Sword & Scabbard
Description: The Model 1840 Foot Officer’s sword is one you don’t see very often as the regular army was relatively small in 1840's, and this sword was not well liked by the officers, thus it was replaced by the Model 1850 foot officer sword only 10 years later. This is an early example, made by N.P. Ames. Given the early Springfield address, this one could have seen action in the War with Mexico, and then again in the Civil War. The sword has a 32 inch blade, which though graying with age and use has visible etching which includes floral and military motifs, a Federal eagle holding a ribbon bearing “E Pluribus Unum”, the Indian chief Tecumseh, and a large “U.S.” The hilt retains much of its original gilt finish. The reverse folding clamshell guard still works properly as the spring button, often missing on these, is still present and functional. The original red felt blade washer is present, and the leather scabbard is solid with minimal cracking. The simulated wire grip does have one large dent on one side, and a couple small dents on top and other side. Because of those, the sword is being priced at less than half of what you would typically have to pay for an early Ames version of this sword with scabbard. A great value for a scarce sword that still displays rather nicely. Please take a look at all the photos, as they provide the best description of condition. I can only post 15 photos here, but if you'd like to see some additional photos, I will also be listing this for on Ebay the same day I list here, but at a much higher price due to their high fees. Shipping to the lower 48 contiguous states. Shipping charge $40 towards cost of Priority Mail and full insurance. Three day return privilege, buyer pays return shipping. SOLD |
