Scarce Circa 1820 Ancient and Honorable Artillery Belt Plate, used in Kerksis Book
Description: Offered here is a scarce circa 1820 belt plate for the Ancient Honorable Artillery Company of Boston, Massachusetts. This plate was at one time in the collection of Norm Flaydermann. It is also the exact same plate pictured in the reference book "Plates and Buckles of the American Military 1795-1874" by Sydney C. Kerksis. It is pictured as Figure 90 in that book, and credited as coming from the collection of Norm Flaydermann. Kerksis assigns the plate a 9 on his Rarity Scale, which means few are thought to exist, making this plate much rarer than most Confederate plates. The only higher rarity rating is 10, which would be one of a kind. I thought it rather neat to have an item in my collection that was once owned by a pioneer of the collecting world, and was also pictured in a well-known reference book. It is rather cool to compare the plate to the pictures in the book and see the exact dark spots, blemishes, shapes in the solder, etc. Kerksis identifies the plate as a circa 1810 cross belt plate for the Company. However, in the more recent book "American Military Belt Plates" by Michael J. O'Donnell & J. Duncan Campbell, it is identified as a circa 1820 waist belt plate (page 125, Plate 195). I think that is the more likely the correct identification. I'm also including an 1824 dated Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company membership card which displays great with the belt plate. The Company was first founded in 1637 but received its charter from the Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1638, thus that date on their buckles, plates, and buttons over the years. (Coincidentally, my 9th great grandfather joined the Company in that same year, 1638, and his son, my 8th great grandfather, was at one time its captain.) During the colonial period, the Company functioned as a school for military training, its members consisting of militia officers from the various companies across the colony, with the aim that the militias of the many towns and localities could be provided with the same basic military instruction and tactics so that they could function cohesively when called out to engage in major campaigns together. Many members served with distinction during the French and Indian War. In 1746 the Company moved to quarters in Faneuil Hall in Boston, where their museum still remains. Members were present at the Boston Tea Party and served in the Continental Army during the American Revolution. Following the Revolution, members of the Company helped suppress Shay's Rebellion in western Massachusetts. With the reorganization of the Massachusetts Militia in 1840, and due to the distance between all the various militia organizations in the state, the Company became less involved in military training and active service, and by the time of the Civil War had become more of a ceremonial and social organization which retiring military figures, political dignitaries, and businessmen joined. The organization still exists today. Please take a look at all the photos as they provide the best description of condition. Shipping to the lower 48 contiguous states. Three day return privilege, buyer pays return postage. Shipping cost $15.00 for Priority Mail, insured. If you buy multiple items I will combine to save you money on shipping. SOLD |
