Scarce and beautiful circa 1840 shoulder belt plate of the Boston Light Infantry. Originally organized in 1786 as "The Independent Light Infantry", they took the name "Boston Light Infantry" in 1798. The company adopted the nickname "Tigers" in 1822. The Boston Light Infantry was a school for Boston area militia, and for years wore black coats, white cross-belts, and bearskin hats. The served for many years in the 1st Regiment Light Infantry Massachusetts Volunteer Militia. Upon the outbreak of the Civil War, the Tigers moved into Fort Warren in Boston Harbor to help protect the seaport from invasion. While garrisoned there, members composed the famous war song "John Brown's Body". When the call came for nine-month enlistments, many members joined the 43rd Massachusetts Volunteers, or "Tiger Regiment", serving in North Carolina. The plate measures about 3 1/2" by 4 1/2". It has the beautiful high relief brass tiger head attached to the center, with the letters "BLI" above, and the date "1798" below. Like the corresponding plate pictured in Plate 731 of "American Military Belt Plates" by Michael J. O'Donnell and J. Duncan Campbell, it has a large pin and shows solder marks from where hooks were previously attached. Please take a look at all the photos as they provide the best description.
