This is a Model 1889 US Navy cartridge box for the Colt Model 1889/95 revolver, caliber .38 Colt. Overall good condition, except as noted, and everything is present. The leather is supple and exhibits surface cracks on the tab, belt loops, and one side of the cover (shown). There is some loss of the black finish. The wooden block inside held two “new cartridge packs” and six individual cartridges. The “new cartridge pack” consisted of a central wood plug and a brass foil collar that held the .38 cartridges. Once loaded, the plug and fold were discarded. The cover is boldly embossed “USN” in an oval, and the closing tab has a nicely patinaed brass snap that attaches to the bottom of the box. The two side ears are stitched to the flap and remain intact. Two loops attach the box to the user’s belt. Overall, it is a nice example of late 19th century Navy gear. Shipping $10.
