Very unique large fighting knife dates to around 1790's to 1860
Description: This large knife was found in New Orleans and probably started life as a kitchen knife but was repurposed for use as a fighting knife. It was all hand forged from spring steel with an integrated choil and guard, a rat-tail tang with 3-rivet stag grips. The copper belt-scabbard that the owner had specially made for this knife is more intriguing to me than the knife. It was made, possibly from copper sheeting from the bottom of a ship. No solder was used on the scabbard, it was just folded over at the seams and hammered tight. Two rivets hold two slabs of wood on the inside so the blade makes contact with wood. An iron D-ring was added for a belt loop or a hanger. A very well made scabbard by a skilled blacksmith. It fits the standard criteria for a confederate side knife and also fits the standard criteria for an edged weapon carried in the pre-Bowie knife era of the 1820's and earlier. "This fearsome weapon was infinitly more effective at close quarters than a club or the cumbersome, unreliable fire-arm of those early days." This old knife could have been carrid by one of Jean LaFitte's gulf pirates in the early 1800's or by a confederate soldier in the Civil War --- a little fun Imaginative reconstruction of it's history to fill in the blanks. The savage looking blade is 13-1/2" long and overall length is 19 inches. The blade must've had a light coat of rust before it was cleaned long ago. It has a light, even, grey color so the cleaning was done quite a long time ago as it takes a long time to get that age grey color back. Some ares of light pitting still remain but most of the pitting was ground off but somebody did a nice job cleaning it. Open to offers! SOLD
